Spirit of Millie and New Rising Star Award Recipients Named

The Spirit of Millie Awards honor progressive grassroots leaders whose commitment and work for economic and social justice exemplify the spirit, drive and tenacity that was the hallmark of our late Board Member Millie Jeffrey's life. At the March 21, 2010 Millie Jeffrey Awards Dinner the following progressive activists will be recognized with this prestigious award: Elizabeth Bunn, Maryion Lee, Ethel Schwartz  and Ron Scott.

For the first time, a Millie Jeffrey Rising Star Award will be given to a young progressive activist leader. The recipient of this new award is Sarah Juster, an Ann Arbor high school student who has shown exceptional leadership in the fight against genocide and to provide relief to the refugees of Darfur.

This year's Dinner theme is "Celebrating Progressive Women in Politics." Our keynote speaker is Millie's friend and ally, Madeleine M. Kunin. Gov. Kunin was the first woman governor of Vermont, and the first woman in U.S. history to be elected governor three times, serving from 1985 - 1991.  Gov. Kunin is the author of "Pearls, Politics and Power: How Women Can Win and Lead."  Millie Jeffrey drove all the way from Detroit to Burlington, Vermont to see Gov. Kunin's inauguration.

The 2010 Annual Millie Jeffrey Awards Dinner will be held on Sunday, March 21, 2010, at Courtyard by Marriott,
3205 Boardwalk, Ann Arbor, MI 48108. The reception will begin at 6 pm and dinner at 7 pm.
